US Ambassador: Bulgaria Is No Police State

The Ambassador of the United States to Bulgaria, James Warlick, has declared that the accusations that Bulgaria is a police state are wrong.

“The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is a police state, Bulgaria is not. This are wrong statements. Bulgaria is a well-working democracy, ruled by a government that respects the law,” Warlick said, referring to the recent accusations that the heavy-handed approach by Bulgaria's PM Boyko Borisov has brought police oppression to the country.

In an interview Tuesday for the Bulgarian private Nova TV, Warlick added that the EC report is an outside validation of what Bulgarian citizens also see.

He has also expressed his belief that the government has taken all necessary measures to improve the judicial system and to provide supremacy of the law in the country.

The US Ambassador has also stated that the reform in the judicial system will take time and that Bulgaria should be careful to make it “the right way”.

Warlick has said that since the specialized courts work very well in the USA and other countries, there is no reason for them not to work well in Bulgaria as well.

“The Bulgarian and the US services are co-operating very well,” he said but refused to comment more on the intelligence.

Warlick has also expressed his hope that if the threats against the Bulgarian PM are true, as he has hinted, then measures have been taken to prevent any accidents.

On Sunday, Borisov did not deny that there was an assassination plot against him, prepared by the men detained in special operation “the Killers”.
