Bulgarian Police Hits on Prostitutes in Special Ops

The Bulgarian police arrested Thursday 27 prostitutes during their latest special operation, codenamed “Butterflies.”

The news was announced by the Director of the Police in the Black Sea city of Varna, who defined prostitution as a “specific crime where wages are obtained through immoral means, called by the law idling and subject to up to 2 years of jail time or probation.”

In order to present evidence for such crime, the authorities must prove continuity - for this reason the operation began over 4 years ago, the police chief explained.

16 of the women have been arrested numerous times with warnings to stop their illegal activities. 15 are Bulgarian and one is Russian. All have been charged. Two minor girls from Varna were also among those detained – they have been placed in a social home. The other 9 were released after receiving a warning since this was their first registered offense.

The women were arrested on the highway leading from Varna to the capital Sofia and the rood to the other Black Sea city of Burgas.
