Bulgaria is seeking ways to boost its efforts to help Afghanistan achieve stability, Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov said in a special statement.

“The transition strategy in Afghanistan should not been seen as a lack of commitment on part of the international community,” Mladenov declared Tuesday as cited by the Foreign Ministry press service.

The Minister has emphasized the fact that Afghanistan is still struggling with security issues, which is why Bulgaria will be unyielding in its commitment to the NATO/ISAF efforts, in providing training to the Afghan army, as well as to Afghan police officers through the EUPOL mission.

Mladenov has explicitly pointed out the need to help Afghanistan with institution building.

“Bulgaria is going to seek ways to continue to support this process, in the very least by extending its program to train Afghan diplomats,” he explained.

Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister has urged the UN to initiate a process of bilateral and multilateral talks between Afghanistan and its neighbors in the region.

“I believe that we are in Afghanistan not to impose our decisions but to help. This is why we have to keep in mind the limitations of the international involvement in Afghanistan. The international community must be more sensitive towards understanding the political processes in the country and its region,” Mladenov said.

In his special statement, the Bulgarian Minister thanked all Muslim and Arab countries which have been participating in the ISAF to help in the recovery of Afghanistan.
