Bulgaria’s Minister of Education, Sergey Ignatov, informed Monday that he is starting negotiations with the EU to provide funds for salaries of preschool teachers.

Ignatov made the statement during a parliamentary round table dedicated to the amendments of the Education Act.

The Minister pointed out the move comes a little bit too late, but nevertheless it is crucial for the prevention of school drop outs in upper grades.

According to Ignatov, mandatory preschool education will help first graders better adapt to the school environment, by learning social norms of behavior, which will improve the learning process.

Parents will not be asked to pay fees for preschool education, except up to BGN 1.50 per day for food.
