Bulgarian Traffic Police Sanction 1 Million Yearly

The Bulgarian traffic police have announced that they have established more than 1 million violations on the road per year.

“We impose sanctions on about 4 000 – 5 000 pedestrians per year. However, the collection of fines is about 65%, which is still high, in comparison to a few years ago when this percentage was below 10%,” said Aleksi Stratiev, deputy chief of the Directorate General for Security Police.

Stratev added that the drop of road deaths for last year, which in Bulgaria is 13%, is bigger than the one in Europe, where the number of people who have died on the road has decreased by 10%.

He also expressed his hope that the Parliament will soon adopt amendments to the Road Traffic Act, which would make easier the imposing of sanctions when the violators have been recorder with cameras.

“At the moment, the procedure is clumsy. The idea is that the owner of the car, caught on camera in violation, should be punished directly, no matter who the driver has been at the time,” Stratiev said.
