Bulgaria Classifies Notorious 'Krasio' Judicial Corruption Case

The perjury trial against Krasimir Georgiev aka “Krasio the Black” will be held behind closed doors, the Sofia City Court informs Thursday.

The first session is scheduled for next Tuesday while only a month ago the magistrates from the same court issued a statement against the growing number of cases tried “in the dark,” pointing out the so-called special spying devices (SRS) must remain secret only when they involve classified State information, personal information about individuals which is not to be revealed in public, or information about ways the SRS are used.

The scandal involving Krasimir Georgiev, from northern city of Pleven, broke one year ago, when it was revealed the latter, allegedly, offered a number of magistrates to secure their high-ranking positions in exchange for cash. Several judges and magistrates, including Supreme ones, have been dismissed or resigned in the aftermath over proven contacts with Georgiev.

Despite the decision to classify the trial, the public already knows, after a flurry of media reports, the case against “Krasio” is based on phone logs, magistrates’ testimony, and Georgiev’s own “black book.”

The indictment states that on June 24, 2009, Georgiev told the interrogating prosecutor that he did not know any magistrates while later, the above mentioned evidence, showed he had many phone calls and meetings with judges and magistrates.

8 judges and 8 prosecutors are going to be called on the witness stand beginning next week.
