Summer Cinema to Gather Art Lovers in Sofia

The Bulgarian Prime Minister and the mayor of Sofia have participated in the opening ceremony of a summer art-cinema in Sofia on Thursday.

“My team and I have one very important goal – to prepare Sofia to become a European culture capital in 2019,” said Yordanka Fandakova, mayor of Sofia.

The summer art-cinema is located at the garden of the National Palace of Culture. Theater plays will be performed during the day and Bulgarian movies will be shown at night for free.

The project costs BGN 200 000 and was donated to Sofia by the Bulgarian construction company “Glavbolgarstroy”.

Todor Bulev, author of the project, said that the idea came from Shakespeare's theater.

“The working title was “Globe Theater”. Shakespeare's theater was like this – with wooden constructions, wooden benches, a stage. This was our initial inspiration,” Bulev said.

“Years ago this place have looked like this but it has been neglected. It has become a meeting point for drug addicts, not for people who needed culture,” said the Bulgarian actor Hristo Mutafchiev who was at the opening ceremony.

“It is much different now. It is cozy and different things will happen – jam sessions will take place here, movies will be shown. It will be a cool place, one that every capital has,” said the actress Ernestina Shinova.

The Sofia mayor Fandakova promised that soon the whole garden of the National Palace of Culture will have the same look.

The Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov made a promise Fandakova to keep providing her sponsors who will realize similar projects.
