Bulgarian Capital Starts Drilling Metro Tunnel to Airport

The Bulgarian capital has started constructing the final section of its first metro line, which is suppose to go all the way to the Sofia International Airport.

On Thursday, the companies building the final section started drilling a tunnel under the Alexander Malinov Blvd in the Mladost Quarter.

The operational section of the first subway line currently runs from the Obelya Quarter to the Mladost Quarter through the downtown. It is 18 km long and has 14 stations.

From Mladost, the line is supposed to go for 11 more km and 9 more stations under the Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd to the Druzhba Quarter and all the way to the Sofia Airport. An extension will also run from Mladost 1 to Mladost 4 in the opposite direction.

The construction which started Thursday will first focus on a section of 2.15 km with two stations running to the Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd.

The new section of the first metro line will be construction by a company called “Metro Mladost Union” including four partners PSI Jsc, Trace Sofia Jsc, Adval Jsc, and Stroyinject Jsc.

The construction is estimated to cost BGN 223 M; the deadline for its completion is 39 months. The metro station at the Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd will also feature an underground parking facility, the first of its kind in Sofia.
