The Bulgarian Parliament approved amendments to the Bulgarian Foreigners Act, which will allow high-skilled non-EU citizens to work and live with their families in Bulgaria.

The amendment is transposing the Blue European Labor Card directive, which settles the requirements for entering and residence of non-EU citizens in any EU country.

The newly approved amendment also envisions the introduction in Bulgaria of a status “long-term resident of EU”. Before applying for this status, citizens will have to have lived legally and constantly in Bulgaria for five years.

In order for foreigners to be able to receive a “long-term resident of EU” status, they will have to prove they have sufficient resources and a health insurance. These requirements aim at preventing the residence of citizens who might become a burden to the EU member state.

“After receiving it, the status “long-term resident of EU” will be permanent, as long as the citizen does not violate the principles of a substantial public interest,” the government's press office announced Wednesday.
