More than BGN 50 M additional revenue to the Bulgarian treasury is expected to come after adopting amendments in the Road Traffic Act, the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications has announced.

According to Minister Alexander Tsvetkov, after the adoption of the proposed amendments against illegal transportations, about 150 cars will be suspended every month.

“About 10-15% of all carriers fall into the gray sector, which is the main problem in this department. Now violators pay their fines and keep on driving and there is no effect of the sanctions against them,” Tsvetkov said.

He added that when an illegal transportation is found, the amendments envision suspension of the car and removing of its registration plate and ticket.

The Bulgarian Minister of Transport said that along with the amendments, there will also be a new transport scheme, which will include not only road, but also railroad transport.

The new scheme will provide a synchronization between the schedules of the long-distance buses and the trains.

“Currently there are more than 2 700 route schedules, which are not synchronized and do not reflect the needs of the people. This is why this scheme is unprofitable and it puts all carriers in a non-loyal competition,” Tsvetkov said and added that the new synchronized transport scheme will work in 2011.
