One year after coming into office and a day ahead of his professional holiday, Bulgaria's interior minister has praised his department for its efforts to impose the rule of law and stamp out fraud and corruption.

“Bulgaria's interior ministry succeeded in cracking down organized crime and bringing it to levels, acceptable for the society,” Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told the Bulgarian National Radio on Sunday.

"The black list featuring names of organized crime groups leaders have been extended from 177 to 189," the minister said, adding that this is thanks to the in-depth analysis of all services within the department.

Asked how he views the proposal to bring under one roof the fire department and the civil defense, he said this can be done only after a wide public discussion.

The center-right government elected last July has taken a harder line on crime and graft than its predecessor.

Over the last one year Bulgarian police arrested dozens of members of powerful crime gangs suspected of money laundering, racketeering, drug trafficking, bribery and tax frauds.

The raids have been part of the efforts of the government to shake off the country's reputation for rampant graft and crime.
