Uruguay has become the second team after the Netherlands to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup 2010 after beating Ghana in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

The quarter-final match at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium ended in a 1:1 draw with goals of Sulley Montari in the extra time of the first half for Ghana and Diego Forlan in the 55th minute for Uruguay.

In the extra time of the second half Uruguay's Luis Suarez saved a goal on the line with his hand, which got him a red card and a penalty for Ghana. However, Asamoah Gyan hit the bar sending the match into an extra half hour.

In the penalties, Uruguay won 4:2 as its goalkeeper Fernando Muslera saved efforts from Stephen Appiah and Dominic Adiyiah.

Uruguay has reached the semi-final for the first time since 1970. It will be facing the Netherlands who beat Brazil 2:1 earlier on Friday.
