Bulgarian tennis star Magdalena Maleeva has been described as “Belgian” at the official Wimbledon blog by the freelancer journalist Helen Gilbert.

“Former Wimbledon champions Martina Navratilova and Jana Novotna overcame a scare on Court 12 to see off Britain's Annabel Croft and Belgium's Magdalena Maleeva in straight sets in the ladies' invitation doubles in a whisker over an hour,” Gilbert wrote.

Maleeva was included in Wimbledon's special invitations to eight couples of former big tennis stars of the championship. Partner of the Bulgarian is Britain's Annabel Croft.

The couple lost their second game in the tournament by the US Martina Navratilova and Jana Novotna from the Czech Republic, which have topped the first place in their group B and have qualified for the final.

The 35-year-old Maleeva is one of three sister, all former internationally active tennis players. Magdalena won a career total of ten Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour titles in singles and five in doubles.

She is the recipient of the 1993 WTA Tour Most Improved Player Award and was nominated for the 1990 WTA Tour Most Impressive Newcomer Award. She participated at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Atlanta and Athens.

Her best position in the WTA Tour was number 4 between January 29 to February 4, 1996.
