Bulgaria Oks Downsizing of Competition Watchdog

Bulgaria's Parliament has approved at second reading the downsize from 7 to 5 of the staff in the Competition Protection Commission.

The regulatory body will now consist of President, Vice-President and three members. The amendment also envisions a 5-year mandate for all members of the Commission, instead of the previous 6 years for the President.

The downsizing of the staff in the Competition Protection Commission aims to decrease its budget, minimize the risk of corruption and provide more effective field for work.

The adopted amendment is part of the Parliament's decision from 2009 to optimize the staff and the mandate of the independent regulatory bodies.

Bulgaria's Competition Protection Commission is an independent regulatory body, responsible for the implementation of the Community Competition Law. The President and the members are elected by the Parliament.
