Eurostat: Food, Tobacco Cheapest in Bulgaria

Bulgarians enjoy the cheapest food and tobacco, and the second-cheapest alcohol in the EU, announced Eurostat, EU's statistics agency, Monday.

Eurostat revealed a report on comparative prices of foods and beverages in the 27-member union.

According to the report, Bulgaria ranks as the country with cheapest food and tobacco in the EU, at respectively 68% and a mere 46% of average prices for the Union.

Alcohol in Bulgaria is 77% of the average EU-price, second only to alcohol sold in Romania at 70%.

In the food basked, Bulgarians enjoy the cheapest bread and cereals (52%) and meat (59%), with the price milk products and eggs comparatively higher at 92% of average rates.

According to the report, the EU-members with the most expensive food are Denmark (139%), Ireland (129%), and Finland (120%). Alcohol is most expensive in Finland at 170% of average EU-prices, closely followed by Ireland at 167%. High levels of alcohol prices are observed, as is traditional, in countries like Sweden (138%) and Denmark (135%).

Tobacco is most expensive in Ireland at a staggering 217% of average prices in the Union.
