Bulgaria’s President, Georgi Parvanov, declared Friday that after the end of his second term next year he will dedicate his time to his family and a possible civic project.

In an interview for the morning show of Bulgaria’s largest private TV channel bTV, Parvanov vaguely dismissed reports that he will found a new political party by saying he plans to “invest in the preparation of young leaders,” and at least in the beginning, will remain involved in politics.

The President pointed out he had already been a party leader (of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, before elected for first term) and this currently is not his “biggest ambition.”

“I would however take part in a civic project that could lead to alternative politics because we need new quality in our political life and new capable people. For 20 years we are just pushing forward the same political functionaries,” Parvanov pointed out, joking that he would not follow Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov’s example and look for talents on the country’s roads. (Parvanov was hinting about Borisov’s statements that he met his new health minister on a road to the city of Veliko Tarnovo.)

The President did also offer the surprising revelation that in 2005 former cabinet leader from BSP, Sergey Stanishev, actually offered him the post of PM, saying he declined since “this had never been his childhood dream.’

”I refused because I feel much stronger as President,” Parvanov told bTV.

The Head of State finished the interview with the announcement he will publish a book with all the articles about him that have circulated in tabloids in Bulgaria.

Meanwhile Borisov, who, at the very same time, was giving an interview for the other major Bulgarian TV channel Nova Televizia, said he “did not care” about the President’s future political plans.
