An American soldier has been shot by accident during training at the Novo Selo facility in Eastern Bulgaria.

The 23-year-old soldier was shot in his left leg by another serviceman Saturday night, and was treated at the District Hospital in the city of Sliven, located close to the Novo Selo Training Ground, which is one of the four military facilities in Bulgaria used by the US Army as part of the so called Joint Task Force East.

The US Embassy has clarified that the man was transported to the hospital by helicopter, reported local news website sliveninfo.bg. The original announcement of the Sliven hospital said that the accident had happened at the Barshen Airport, a mixed used airport to the south of the city, which is currently not in operation, and that the soldier had been transported by ambulance.

On Tuesday, the American serviceman was taken to an American military hospital in Germany. Sliveninfo.bg cites Capt. Mike Gunther from the US Army as saying that the Bulgarian doctors provided excellent care for the wounded ranger.
