German theologist Fischer-Appelt has made a tremendous contribution to educational cooperation in Europe.

Bulgarian people have a democratic ethos, an open mind and an exploratory spirit, thinks renowned German academic Prof. Peter Fischer-Appelt.

“Bulgarians are great people, they are born for democracy, but have to re-learn it again and again”, said Fischer-Appelt in an interview with the Bulgarian national television.

Sometimes Bulgarians fail to grab historical opportunities, added he, yet they possess a very strong potential for positive change.

The German academic expressed his high opinion of Bulgarian education and science, and was especially pleased to point out his long-standing cooperation with Bulgaria

Prof. Fischer-Appelt is the founder of the German circle of friends of the St. Cyril and Methodius Foundation. He is also member of the foundation's executive board.

Prof. Peter Fisher-Appelt is doctor of theology, holder of honorary degrees, and has served as president of Hamburg University (1970-1991). In recent years he has taken an active part in a number of projects on education and education reform in Europe.

He is seen as one of the founding fathers of educational cooperation between the European East and West.
