The Bulgarian Parliament is planning to reduce by 15% the government subsidy for the political parties, as part of a package of austerity measures.

The proposal was announced Thursday and was approved by 85 MPs, while 5 turned their thumbs down and 12 abstained. The change is expected to save BGN 7.5 M.

The MP from the right-wing “Blue Coalition”, Asen Agov, expressed his party's opinion that responsibility should be shared by everybody, but other spheres that need to be reformed should be the priority.

“Saving less than BGN 10 M is not as good as what could have been saved after serious changes in the health care and the education systems,” Agov said.

The “Blue Coalition” MP added that this measure has been proposed at a meeting with the organizations subsidized by the government and has not been consulted with the parties.

He expressed his concern with buildings that the trade unions are renting, which he called “direct trading of government subsidy”, and urged them to pay their rent according to market prices.
