Bulgarians who persistently fail to make contributions to their health and other benefits could face up to three years behind bars.

The information was reported Saturday by the Bulgarian daily “Monitor,” citing the Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Totyu Mladenov.

The issue had been discussed Friday during a meeting of the so-called Three-Way Council for Social Collaboration between the cabinet, the labor unions and the employers with only the latter opposing the proposal.

Experts from the labor unions say about BGN 900 M from insurance contributions are missing at the National Revenue Agency (NRA).

Meanwhile, the balance sheets of the National Social Security Institute (NOI) show that insurance deposits must go up anywhere between 6% and 9% in order to plug the deficit gap of BGN 2.1 B.
