Bulgarian commandos have made three arrests during a special police operation, code-named “The Crooks”, in a neighborhood of the capital Sofia, police announced.

"The operation targeted businessmen, who are representatives in Bulgaria of a huge German company," Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told Darik radio.

In his words the suspects have abused more than BGN 1 M of investments that the German partners made in three tranches.

“This is an operation to protect foreign investments in Bulgaria,” Minister Tsvetanov stressed.

The raid is part of the efforts of Bulgaria's new center-right government, which swept the elections in July, to shake off the country's reputation for rampant graft and crime.
