Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev has stated that he expected to be charged by the Prosecutor’s Office on political grounds.

“I am ready, and I know that there is a political intention for that on part of the government,” the leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party Stanishev told the national radio on Sunday.

The prime minister of Bulgaria in 2005-2009 has been investigated since the fall of 2009 for mishandling classified information as secret intelligence reports of Bulgaria’s State National Security Agency had allegedly been leaked by him, according to his successor Boyko Borisov.

Earlier in May, Bulgarian prosecutors have said the charges against Stanishev will be filed after May 30, and unconfirmed reports have claimed his bail will be BGN 100 000.

On Sunday, Stanishev stated that he would be taking the expected charges against him very seriously if the government of the GERB party had not adopted double standards. In his words, acting Finance Minister Simeon Djankov is supposed to be charged for making public classified information while speaking in Parliament.

The ex PM has also criticized the Cabinet for its intention to withdraw a large amount of money from the fiscal reserve in order to cover the rising budget deficit.

He believes the revision of the 2010 state budget act allowing the government to tap into the reserve will threaten Bulgaria’s financial stability, and the economic policies of the Cabinet are “inadequate.”

“Unfortunately, the trends are showing worsening of the economic situation. Djankov said the economic crisis had ended, and at the same time, he revises the budget to include a huge deficit. He had promised BGN 2 B of additional revenue. The poorest people are bearing the brunt of the situation, and the government is not doing anything to relieve them,” stated the Socialists’ leader.

He thinks that the local authorities in Bulgaria are suffering excessively from the government policies, and that the Cabinet had failed to accelerate the contracting of EU funds.

Stanishev cited statistical data showing that the contract of EU funded project increased by only 1% since his government left office, and that Bulgaria had collapsed from the 14th to the 26th place in the EU in that ranking.
