Bulgaria’s Socialist President, Georgi Parvanov, accused the cabinet of the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party of radical actions aiming at scaring ordinary citizens.

Parvanov spoke Saturday in the village of Vitanovtsi, where he inaugurated the “All Saints” Church, just one day after the “Economist” magazine published an article about fears Bulgaria is becoming a police State.

The President reiterated his motive to veto, also on Friday, the Radio and Television Act because the Parliamentary majority is passing laws that aim at solving personal problems. He believes the reduction of the number of members of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM) is a way to control media and scare journalists.

According to Parvanov, Bulgarian media is subject to constant pressure to support the cabinet and demonstrate its strong will.

Regarding the upcoming vote in the Parliament on the updated budget, the President said it is a complicated situation, changing constantly and it is crucial to keep the Currency Board intact and obey financial rules established 15 years ago because "improvisations" would lead to dangerous instability.
