Statistics from the Bulgarian court system show that the number of youth offenders aged 14-17 increased by 5,7% y/y in 2009.

The data showed that youth offenders made up 7,6 % of the total number of people given sentences in 2009, with a total of 3133 teenagers aged 14-17 having been given a criminal record.

The most criminally active group was shown to be youths aged 18-24, with 1 571 sentenced in every 100 000 people from that age range.

Crimes against property made up 40,2 % of the total number of convictions. The number of people convicted of robbery increased by 25,2 % to 1 410 y/y.

Drug-related crimes increased by 42,3% y/y from 948 to 1350. The number of convictions for serious crimes such as murder and rape both fell – 151 for murder and 174 for rape.
