Over 1 M Bulgarians Live below Poverty Line

A staggering number, about 1,2 million, of Bulgarians live below the poverty line, a study of the Economic Social Council shows.

The study was presented Friday, during a forum dedicated to the fight against poverty and social exclusion.

In addition to the large number of poor people, research reveals that in Bulgaria the poverty line is 13 times lower than in countries members of the European Union.

Bulgaria’s Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Valentina Simeonova, announced the cabinet is to prepare by the end of the year a project for a national strategy for fighting poverty, geared towards socially excluded, unemployed and disadvantaged individuals.
