Bulgaria police have detained 4 people in the Burgas Traffic Police (KAT) offices as part of the special police operation ‘Registrars’ that began in April.

Bulgaria Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov confirmed the arrests and also stated that the alleged criminals acted as an organized criminal group involved in the registration of stolen cars.

2 employees from Burgas Police were arrested, who were involved with the registration crimes, including the altering of RAM numbers and car documents. Tsvetanov revealed that the group were dealing in the registration of stolen luxury cars – BMW X5, X6 and Toyota Land Cruiser.

At the end of April five people were detained in the first ‘Registrars’ operation over charges of illegal registration of cars with the Traffic Police (KAT) in Sofia to avoid emissions taxes. Several addresses were raided in the capital and some KAT officials were allegedly busted.

The gang leader was Atanas Tasev, his accomplices are Radoslav Gotsev, Zhelyazko Kalinov, Denislav Yordanov and Angel Iliev.

The 'Registrars' were charged with illegally trading with cars bought in from non EU countries – thus saving on VAT taxes as well as the obligatory KAT vehicle technical tests that cost about BGN 500.
