Pope Benedict XVI has blessed the Bulgarian people and Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov after a speech concentrating on Sts. Cyril and Methodius.

The Pope met with a Bulgarian government delegation in the Vatican Saturday and delivered a speech in Italian. He praised Sts. Cyril and Methodius for spreading Christianity in Bulgaria and also said that they had been extremely important in shaping the spiritual and humane image of the Bulgarian people.

The Pope also urged Bulgaria to demonstrate its Christian roots and to work hard to protect its Christian values. He received 2 gifts from the Bulgarian delegation – a mask of Beethoven made by Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov and a picture of the Catholic Church in the Bulgarian town of Rakovski, whose population is predominantly Catholic.

Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov informed the Pope of his government’s recent decision to make Good Friday a non-working holiday and invited the Pope to Bulgaria for a possible visit in 2012.
