There will be no layoffs of police officers despite Wednesday’s decision of the government to reduce the number of Interior Ministry employees by 3 000, Minister Tsvetanov said.

Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry explained that the number of people working at his institution will be reduced by 3 000 but only because a certain number of police officers are due to retire.

“The major priorities of the Interior Ministry at present are to tackle organized crime in an aggressive way, not to quarrel about social benefits,” he declared Wednesday night in the northeastern city of Shumen.

Commenting about Wednesday’s special police operation codenamed “Excise Taxes”, Tsvetanov revealed police searches showed that about 60% of the alcohol supplied by the distributors to the large retail chains had forged excise labels.
