Sofia's Regional Governor Danail Kirilov assigned an inspection of the property of the Bulgarian Academy of Science which has proved so far that 7 of the Academy's are state property.

Kirilov explained that the inspection aims to identify the condition of state owned real estate, including those of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).

Initial results have shown that the yard of the Bulgarian Museum of Archeology and that of the Institute of Metal Science are state property though BAS claims ownership.

“It's quite troublesome that the Academy disposes of sites that are clearly state-owned,” said Kirilov Tuesday, adding that the two plots have a central location and must be of much interest to investors.

The inspection has also established that BAS has rented out some of the state-owned sites without first declaring a tender for them as is required by the State Property Act.

Thus buildings located in the Novi Iskar residential area in Sofia are not used for scientific purposes but are rented out for EUR 2 per square meter.

“The Bulgarian Museum of Ethnography, which is situated on the central 6 Moskovska St has provided us with the most though information on its rents - a premise on the museum's ground floor of 100 sq meters has been let out for EUR 2454 per month,” announced Kirilov and concluded that the case with BAS real estate property needs to be settled once and for all in favor of the state which will not “prevent the Academy from using the sites.”

BAS plans to rally on Wednesday against the government's plans to restructure the Academy by closing down its main administration and claiming back its property, which according to the Bulgarian scholars has been donated to the institution by private individuals.
