New Zealand's products are well accepted in Bulgaria but the bilateral trade needs to be boosted, according to Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov.

Naydenov met Thursday with Peter Kennedy, New Zealand's Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, Romania, Bulgaria and the European Union stationed in Brussels, who is also New Zealand's representative in NATO, announced the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

Kennedy has offered the Bulgarian government cooperation regarding sheep breeding for meat production.

Minister Naydenov has pointed out that his ministry is watching closely the situation of the meat producing farms, the main reason for that being the excess of meat on the European market at the moment.

The two officials also discussed the future of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Naydenov emphasized that Bulgaria, as well as most of the EU member states, insists on keeping the present EU agricultural budget at 48%. Other countries demand a reduction of the CAP budget down to 33%.

Bulgaria also insists on faster equalization of the subsidies between the old and the new members of the EU, said Naydenov.

He discussed with Kennedy the bilateral cooperation in the agriculture area and the exchange of agricultural goods and food.
