Turkey, Russia Pen Nuclear Power Plant Deal

On his first official trip to Turkey Russian President Dimitry Medvedev signed 17 agreements, including a pact to build Turkey’s first nuclear power plant.

Medvedev met with Turklish counterpart Abdullah Gul and Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday to sign the agreements, mainly involving energy cooperation between the 2 countries.

Alongside the planned nuclear plant, to be built over the next 7 years in the Mediterranean city of Mersin, the two countries also agreed to further plans for an oil pipeline from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.

The pipeline would allow Russia to expand its oil exports from the Black Sea, bypassing the Bosporus, whose shipping lines are already at capacity. Erdogan saluted the progress on the pipeline, which is to run from the Black Sea port of Samsun to the Mediterranean port of Ceyhan, and said it would ease pressures on the Bosporus and reduce the threat of devastating spills.

Medvedev highlighted the expected increases in the USD 30 B in trade between Turkey and Russia.
