Bulgarian Mayor Kicked Out from Ruling GERB Party

The mayor of the northern Bulgarian town of Gorna Oryahovitsa was ousted from the GERB ruling party and asked to resign.

A spokesperson of the centre-right ruling GERB party announced Wednesday that Yordan Mihtiev has been kicked out from the party and asked to resign from the post of mayor of the town of Gorna Oryahovitsa over his “murky” actions that damage the image of GERB.

The GERB spokesperson refused to elaborate on what the misdoings of the Gorna Oryahovitsa mayor but made it clear that Mihtiev had violated the declaration he had signed for open governance.

Mihtiev, however, refused to resign from his post , stating that “he had been elected by 12 000 people” and that he had been excluded from GERB because “he had refused to be a puppet.”

GERB's Executive Committee has established that Mihtiev had been working against the interests of the party and his public appearances have been damaging to the party's reputation.

“The fact that Mihtiev's actions had been driven by personal ambition and self-interest is quite disturbing,” reads a declaration by the Committee.

The regional GERB management of the Gorna Oryahovitsa district as well the municipal councilors have already denounced Mihtiev's governance.

A week ago the Deputy Mayor of Gorna Oryahovitsa, Dobromir Dobrev, resigned from his post, pointing out his dissatisfaction with Mihtiev's management as the main reason for his decision.

“I will always remember the date May 11, 2008, when Mihtiev demanded that I distance myself from the GERB municipal councilors, from the party and work only for him. But I consider the citizens to be my only employer,” declared Dobrev upon resigning.

Mihtiev responded to the accusation by saying that his deputy had been eager to take up the post of mayor.
