Iceland Volcano Ash Disrupts 900 Flights in Europe

A cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland has continued to move over parts of Europe and the North Atlantic.

About 900 flights to and from airports in Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Germany were canceled on Sunday as a result of the cloud, announced European airspace controller Eurocontrol.

In April, European airspace was closed for several days because of the ash coming from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano leading to more than 100 000 canceled flights and losses of USD 1.7 B for airline companies, according to data of the International Air Transport Association.

Eurocontrol expects a shrinking of the cloud and an improvement of the air traffic situation in Europe.

No flights outbound flights from Bulgaria’s Sofia International Airport were canceled on Sunday. Only one inbound flight from Barcelona to Sofia was canceled in the early hours of the day.
