Bulgaria Customs Seize Opium Haul on Serbia Border

Bulgarian customs officers have seized over 4 kg of opium on the Serbian border at the Kalotina checkpoint.

The customs officers arrested a 31 year-old Bulgarian citizen after making the discovery following a routine check of a Sofia-Vienna bus. The opium was hidden in the bottom of a rucksack.

According to local experts 4 kg of opium could be turned into heroin with a street value of over BGN 70 000.

This is the second seizure of opium made by Bulgarian customs in the last 2 months, with 5kg seized at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint in March.
