The leadership of the Party of the European Socialists (PES) named former Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Sergey Stanishev, Chair of the newly created Foreign Policy Network.

PES points out that Stanishev has been chairman of the Bulgarian Socialist Party since 2001 and led the socialists to victory in the 2005 elections, noting his extensive experience in Foreign and European affairs and the overseeing of Bulgaria’s successful accession to the EU in 2007.

The PES Foreign Policy Network aims at bringing together experts from all PES member parties and will work closely with other relevant initiatives by the PES, such as the ministerial meetings for foreign affairs, defense and development. The network will help the PES deal with issues such as globalization, security and neighborhood policy.

The first meeting of the PES Foreign Policy Network will be held in Brussels on June 16th and will meet at least twice every year.

PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen is quoted saying: “I welcome the creation of the new PES Foreign Policy Network, which will contribute to a stronger, more coherent, and more progressive foreign policy in the EU. Sergey Stanishev is the ideal candidate for the job and I am confident that he will excel in his new responsibility. With the changes brought about by the Lisbon Treaty, notably the ongoing construction of the new External Action Service, foreign policy has achieved an unprecedented place in EU affairs. Sergey has the experience and the vision to ensure that our new Network can immediately plug into this new framework”.
