Bulgarian Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) removed the head of the Appeal Prosecution Office in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv over corruption charges.

The head of the Plovdiv Appeal Prosecutor's Office, Andreya Atanasov is accused of having connections to the Bulgarian businessman Krasimir Georgiev, aka Krasio the Black, charged with brokering magistrates' appointments for the price of EUR 200 000 each.

It has recently been revealed that Atanasov has met up with Georgiev to give him information on an ongoing investigation.

Initially VSS suggested that a lighter punishment be imposed to Atansov because he was not too responsive to the attempts of Krasimir Georgiev to get in contact with him. Atanasov was thus expected to be downgraded for three years.

However, Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) removed him Thursday from the post head of the Plovdiv Appeal Prosecution without giving an explanation why a more severe punitary measure was imposed.

11 high-ranking magistrates have been exposed so far in another scandal for their ties with the notorious Krasio the Black, who is facing charges of “trading” magistrate positions. Only 2 have been dismissed by the VSS Anti-corruption Committee.
