Bulgaria to Back Syria for EU Association Agreement

Bulgaria is going to support Syria in achieving its goal to sign an association agreement with the EU, Foreign Minister Mladenov declared in Damascus.

Mladenov met with his Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem; he was part of the Bulgarian state delegation led PM Borisov which visited Syria on Sunday.

“Bulgaria is coming back to the Middle East region to its old partners and new friends,” Mladenov told his Syrian counterpart. The two foreign ministers agreed to review all bilateral agreements that are in force.

With respect to the Middle East conflict, Mladenov backed strengthening the dialogue in the region with the help of powerful intermediaries as the states in it are starting to pay greater attention to the public opinion of their nations.

In his words, Bulgaria is going to seek ways to contribute to this dialogue by mobilize the resources of the EU.

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister also commented on the Iranian nuclear program describing the situation with it as “worrying”.

The top diplomats of Bulgaria and Syria declared their convictions that the Middle East must be turned into a zone free of weapons of mass destruction.
