The road renovation in the capital is the top priority of the City Hall, according to Sofia's Mayor, Yordanka Fandakova.

Fandakova, who spoke Friday, promised that by the end of May the renovation of the main thoroughfares would be done and the crews will move to smaller streets.

The Mayor explained the very large number of potholes with the prolonged winter and the fact that in the last 30 years no major renovations have been done on Sofia's roads, adding the city has about 3 500 km of boulevards and streets, requiring huge resources.

Sofia is now divided in 6 regions instead of the previous 3 in order to increase competition and the speed of the works. There are also new rules about the equipment, the prices, the quality and the control while crews are working 24 hours a day.

Fandakova further informed the EU had extended the ISPA program for the funds to build the metro and the waste treatment plant.

The Mayor warned that in the summer traffic in Sofia will be impeded even more than now because of upcoming plumbing works and the construction of the metro and road renovations will continue.

The City Hall is beginning thorough cleaning of streets, parks and river beds while 3 new parks will open in Sofia this spring.

Fandakova also warned citizens to obey parking rules because fines are now strictly reinforced.
