Large sections of two of the main boulevards in the Bulgarian capital will be closed down till the end of May due to metro construction works.

Parts of the central Sofia boulevards Patriarh Evtimiy and Vitosha will remain closed for traffic April 20 – May 30, announced on Tuesday the Sofia municipality.

The area around the National Palace of Culture (NDK) will be most affected by the traffic disruption.

No cars will be allowed down the western part of the Vitosha boulevard, in the section between the Patriarh Evtimiy Blvd and the Gurgulyat street in central Sofia.

The two lanes in the southern part of the Patriarh Evtimiy boulevard in the direction towards the Russian monument will also be closed to road traffic.

No parking will be allowed in the area between Vitosha Blvd and the central Tsar Asen street.

The first line of the Sofia metro was launched in September last year, the second line which will connect the suburban Sofia residential area of Nedezhda with the central Lozenets neighbourhood is expected to be finished by 2012.

However, the construction of the second metro line in the Bulgarian capital Sofia has been stopped over the discovery of a unique archaeology site. On Monday the builders came across a medieval church located in the very downtown of Sofia, next to the Tzum retail center. This led to a temporary termination of the construction work around the Tzum area.
