Iraqi intelligence team had found and killed al Qaeda's leader in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri.

The news was reported Monday by Washington Post, citing Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

Maliki further informed the team had also killed Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, the purported leader of al Qaeda's local affiliate, the Islamic State of Iraq.

The PM said US military had conducted DNA tests on the bodies, but the news were not immediately confirmed by the Americans.

The Iraqi leader's claims come in the heels of the March 7 elections in the country which did not produce a clear victory, but still gave Maliki hopes for a second term.
