Bulgaria Opens Key Airports as Volcanic Ash Cloud Backs Off

The airports of Plovdiv and Burgas in Southern Bulgaria are opened as of 10 am Monday as the Iceland volcanic ash cloud has withdrawn to the north.

The airports of Plovdiv and Burgas will be opened for a period of six hours at first but this might be extended depending on the atmospheric conditions, the Bulgarian Transport Ministry announced.

The Sofia Airport is also in operation as it is has not been shut overnight. However, most flights to and from it have been canceled as air traffic in much of Western and Central Europe is still blockaded because of the volcanic ash.

Bulgaria’s fourth major airport Varna is expected to be opened as of 11 am on Monday.

After reaching Northern, Southeastern, and South-central Bulgaria on Sunday, April 18, on Monday, the volcanic ash cloud moved in north-northwestern direction.

The Sofia Airport has continued to service flights to Italy, Spain, Russia, Greece, Egypt, and Libya.
