Transport Ministers of the EU member states are holding Monday a video conference in an attempt to figure out how to alleviate the air traffic disruption caused by the Iceland volcanic ash.

As of Monday morning, the airspace of Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, and the UK remains closed.

Bulgaria, France, Italy, Norway, Poland and Sweden have their airspace partially open, while the airports in Greece, Lithuania, Portugal, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Spain operate normally.

The European Commission has decided to set up a special commission chaired by EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kalas to evaluate the air traffic situation and the economic consequences of the volcanic ash cloud, which is estimated to have affected close to 7 million passengers in 4 days as 63 000 flights have been canceled in that period, according to data of the international airports council ACI.
