Bulgaria Journalist Sues Cabinet over Information Blackout

A journalist from a Sofia-based media had filed a law suit against the Bulgarian Council of Ministers over their refusal to provide information about the expenses made by Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, on trips abroad.

The information was reported Tuesday by attorney Kiril Terziiski, from the “Access to Information” Foundation, who is in charge of the case.

Terziiski says the institution claimed they did not have such data because Borisov spends his own money when traveling outside the country.

The journalist had requested details about the number of business trips, their location and the expenditures made by the PM, but received an answer stating Borisov pays for his own trips.

The case is filed with the Supreme Administrative Court and will be tried in September.

Upon learning that there is a law suit, the Council of Ministers has issued information about the official trips abroad, showing that between July 27 2009, and December 7 2009, Borisov had spent BGN 3 420 on official visits.

Terziiski is also leading a case against President Georgi Parvanov, over the refusal of the latter's head secretary to give information about the names and the number of prisoners that have been pardoned and the names of the people who were part of the commissions dealing with the procedure.
