French companies are interested in becoming concessionaires in Bulgaria's capital water supply company “Sofia Water,” according to the French Ambassador, Etienne de Poncins.

The information was further confirmed Tuesday by the CEO of the company, Ivan Ivanov.

The interest is mostly geared towards the UK United Utilities company which includes the concession of “Sofia Water.”

About a week ago, the Sofia City Hall also informed that a change of the concessionaire is a strong possibility.

United Utilities said in a statement for the Bulgarian daily “Dnevnik” that after the sale of their shares in Northern Gas Networks Holdings Limited and Manila Water Company, they have received several offers but are continuing to assess them.

Ivanov voiced his satisfaction from the interest towards “Sofia Water,” which he sees as a sign the utility is in good state, adding water prices should not be affected in case there is a new concession deal.

The CEO further said, however, water prices will go up January 1, 2011, but this move would depend on the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation.
