Dr. Milanova announced many Bulgarian schizophrenia patients don't get any treatment.

Some 70 000 people in Bulgaria have schizophrenia, Bulgarian psychiatrists announced, as quoted by doctoronline.bg.

National Psychiatry Consultant, Dr. Vihra Milanova, announced data of the World Health Organization showing that about 1% of the world’s population has schizophrenia. She participated in a seminar dedicated to the world day for the treatment of schizophrenia, April 11.

“Part of the Bulgarian schizophrenia patients receive medicines through the National Health Insurance Fund, others are hospitalized, and still others do not receive any treatment at all,” said Milanova while revealing that about 10% of them commit suicide.

15 new schizophrenia cases are discovered per every 100 000 people. Sick men get their first symptoms at around 21 years of age, on average, and women – around 27.
