Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, sent a condolence letter to his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk, in occasion of the tragic death of President Lech Kaczynski.
Kaczynski, who was due to visit Smolensk to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, in which Soviet troops killed thousands of Poles, died Saturday when the government TU-154 plane crashed near the airport of the Russian city of Smolensk.
“We mourn along with friendly Poland,” Borisov told Bulgarian media Saturday.
According to the PM, Poland had lost an exceptional statesman, who was always connected and faithful to the Polish idea and the destiny of the country.
“In his last living hour, Kaczynski was traveling to bow to the victims of the Katyn massacre, to share the pain of thousands of Polish families, and we bow to him today” Borisov stated.
The Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva, has also extended official condolences.
Borisov is just one of the many leaders around the world, who expressed shock and deep sorrow from the death not only of Lech Kaczynski, but his wife Maria and a great number of the Polish political elite, who also perished in the crash.
Donald Tusk, a long-time rival of Kaczynski, is said to have cried upon hearing the tragic news.
