EUROPOL Head Lauds Bulgaria Anti-crime Efforts

The Director of EUROPOL, Rob Wainwright, is highly impressed by the results achieved by the Bulgarian police.

Wainwright was on an official visit to Bulgaria on the initiation of Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, spoke late Wednesday saying the new legal framework aimed at preventing money laundering and at property confiscation over tax evasion is very effective.

The EUROPOL Head says Bulgaria can serve as an example to all countries in the region.

According to Wainwright, Bulgaria has taken part in 150 joint operations with EUROPOL which means a 100 times increase of the activity on the part of the Bulgarian authorities compared to one year ago.

One operation had targeted a top organized crime groups dealing with financial fraud and led to the detention of 10 key figures.

The Interior Minister announced the issuing of European search warrants in Bulgaria is forthcoming but declined to offer more details.

EUROPOL is the European Law Enforcement Agency which aims at improving the effectiveness and cooperation of the competent authorities in the Member States in preventing and combating terrorism, unlawful drug trafficking and other serious forms of organized crime.
