Busted Municipal Council Head in Bulgaria's Varna Resisted Arrest

The Varna police found over BGN 100 000 in different currency in the office of the Chair of Varna municipal council, Borislav Gutsanov, who was arrested Wednesday.

Gutsanov had resisted arrest and locked the door of his house prompting police to enter by force, the Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, informed Thursday.

Gutsanov was arrested in a special police operation codenamed ‘Jellyfish’ in Bulgaria’s Black Sea capital targeting economic crimes in the transport and municipal budgets.

Regarding shady businessman Daniel Slavov aka Dido Dunkata, suspected of organizing contraband cigarette channels in the Varna area, who was also taken into custody, Tsvetanov said Dunkata has close ties with many Customs Agents. In Varna, Slavov is largely known as the person actually controlling the Customs Agency.

The Interior Minister reiterated earlier statements that the operation is not based on political motives. The speculation stems from the fact Gutsanov is a member of the Executive Board of the National Council of the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).
