A New Zealand man was allegedly too drunk for the breathalyzer.

The police breathalyzer, with a maximum range of 2,000 mcg, was unable to record the man's blood alcohol concentration, which a blood test later found to be approximately 2,290 mcg, reports the New Zealand Press Association. For North American consumers, that's about .229. The legal limit to drive is .08

The man, in his 50s, was reportedly driving erratically and crossing the centre line repeatedly when police pulled him over. They then found that their breathalyzer was unable to determine the man's blood alcohol content and brought him in for a blood test.

He is scheduled to appear in court on April 13.

The highest blood alcohol content ever recorded was from a 67-year-old man in Bulgaria. In that case, it took five separate lab tests to confirm the man's blood alcohol level at .914 - nearly twice the amount that should have come close to killing him.

A blood alcohol level above .4 is considered potentially life threatening.
