Bulgarian police authorities are carrying out a special operation on cases of VAT draining codenamed “Spongers”, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov revealed.

Operation “Spongers” is going on in Sofia and the southwestern town of Petrich, near the border with Greece, Tsvetanov said on the BNT 1 Tuesday morning.

“This is one of the major anti-crisis measures – to crack down on financial crimes draining the budget,” Tsvetanov explained announcing that a total of five persons have been arrested in Petrich and in Sofia. These include men nicknamed “The Lark” and “The Sponger”.

According to the Minister, the police have captured the main organizers of a value-added tax draining scheme.

“These operations are part of a systematic approach. We will have several more such operations within a few weeks,” Tsvetanov said stressing what he sees as consistency in the actions of the police.
